They are the author’s late brother, Danny, and his grandfather, Grandpa Dan. Learn more about the people who inspired this story.

  • Danny was the author’s brother, who passed away in August 2020 by his own hand. Danny was a kind, considerate young man who always thought about other’s needs.

  • As of April 2025, Grandpa Dan is 94 years old and lives near San Antonio, TX. Grandpa Dan is a former Marine, and Purple Heart recipient from the Korean War. He’s been married to Grandma Sally for over 70 years, having 3 kids together, 6 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren.

About the author

Russell Daniel lives in Austin, TX with his adopted dog, Pia. Russell writes books for children and families that share a universal message.

After the passing of his brother, Danny, the concept of “these are the good old days” became a powerful and present idea in his life.

This book is an expression of that idea.
