About “These Are The Good Old Days”

  • Book overview

A story for children & families about appreciating the moment while you’re still in it. Inspired by the author’s late brother, Danny, and his 94 year old grandfather, Grandpa Dan. A universal message for people of all ages, geared towards children kindergarten through 5th grade. Published by Long Overdue Books (Chicago, IL).

  • About the author

Russell Daniel lives in Austin, TX with his adopted dog, Pia. Russell writes books for children and families that share a universal message. After the passing of his brother, Danny, the concept of “these are the good old days” became a powerful and present idea in his life. This book is an expression of that idea.

  • Short summary of the book

Danny & Grandpa Dan have many adventures together — because, these are the good old days. As Danny gets older he goes through life with this important message. The story ends with Danny & his own child on their adventures — because, it’s always the good old days.

  • Inspiration for the book

The concept of “these are the good old days” had been an idea in the author’s mind for many years before this book. Following the death of his brother, Danny, Russell decided to put this concept into written form. As a children’s book, Russell hopes to share this message with children to look at life in this way as they grow up.

  • The real-life Danny

Danny was a kind and caring young man who always put the needs of others first. Danny studied computer science in college and was working in his field at the time of his death in 2020. Danny was 24 years old when he took his life. Danny was loved and saw his family every weekend.

  • The real-life Grandpa Dan

Grandpa Dan is 94 years old, as of April 2025, and lives with his wife, Grandma Sally, being married for 72 years. Grandpa Dan is a former Marine, who fought in the Korean War and received a Purple Heart. He was a dentist for many years leading the dental practice at the Bexar County Jail and volunteered around the world.
